BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir- Ahmedabad was the first ever Swaminarayan mandir in the Kalupur area of Amdavad built by Lord Swaminarayan in the year 1822 by installing the images of Nara and Narayan. The primary deities of the temple are Nar Narayan Dev, Radha Krishna Dev, Dharmabhaktimata and Hari Krushna Maharaj, Bal Swarup Ghanshyam Maharaj and Ranghmohal Ghanshyam Maharaj. With its architecture based on Burma teak wood, every coloured arch and bracket is a bright different shade, something that stands out in most Swaminarayan temples. According to the locals the temple resembles a fairy-tale with all its colours and opulent carvings that profusely embellish every wooden bracket, column and arch. The temple attracts a million people on the day after Diwali. The temple is an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Ahmedabad. In 1999, the temple held an exhibition of photographs relating to the culture and architecture of the city as part of the Heritage Week celebrations.
